Virtual fencing

BUILDING and maintaining the fences needed to control livestock is an expensive and time-consuming business. The materials alone can cost more than $20,000 a kilometre. On top of that, there is the cost of repairing damage caused by wild animals and falling trees. And then there is the need to move some fences around, a bit at a time, so that grazing land can be used efficiently. Strange as it may seem at first blush, many ranchers would therefore like to see the back of fencesif only they could. According to Dean Anderson, an animal scientist at Americas Department of...

PALMDALE - The featureless black mask hid his face, but everyone in the crowd knew exactly how he felt. Iain Carson threw his arms toward the ceiling, letting a joyous shout erupt from inside. With a 15-9 victory over Eugene Park, Carson earned himself a brand new epee - the first place prize at the Duel at the Oasis fencing tournament at Oasis Park Recreational Center in Palmdale on Saturday. "(That was) the best I've done," Carson said. Carson was the top seed after pool competition, and didn't lose a single bout in the tournament. The only bout Park lost...

Border fencing cost up - Debate likely over $60 billion estimate
Posted by admin / Under Fencing
WASHINGTON - A hotly disputed fence on the U.S.-Mexico border will cost more than $60 billion - nearly 10 times more than original estimates - with billions more needed for land acquisition and maintenance, according to a new government study. While officials have estimated that the 850-mile fence will cost $7 billion to erect, the report notes that maintenance could cost as much as $70 million per mile over its 25-year life span and that miles of private property in Texas still must be purchased. The new cost estimates come as a Democratic-controlled Congress prepares to revisit the contentious issue...

Senate votes to bolster border, reject terror grants (and REJECTED adding 370 miles of fencing)

Washington- The Senate voted unanimously Thursday to bolster security at U.S. borders by pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into more patrols, surveillance flights and sensors to catch illegal immigrants sneaking into the country. Senators approved the $32.7 billion budget for the Homeland Security Department next year by a vote of 100-0. But they rejected proposals to boost funds for cities and states at high risk of terrorism attacks, a sore subject amid a recent spate of terrorism-related arrests and threats targeting metropolitan areas. With border security and immigration reform a top election-year priority, the Senate also agreed to make...

2 1/2 miles of Minuteman fencing completed, more planned
Posted by admin / Under Fencing
With 2 1/2 miles of border fencing along one Arizona ranch completed, the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps plans to build a stronger security fence several miles east. Connie Hair, a spokeswoman for the group, which opposes illegal immigration, said Wednesday that construction of vehicle barriers will start soon on the first fence project, headed by contractor Peter Kunz. An 800-foot section of the five-strand barbed wire fencing constructed on the ranch owned by Jack Ladd and his son, John, had to be restrung after vandals cut the wire strand-by-strand within about 4 inches of each support post, Hair said. After...

Young [homeschooled] blades engage in the art of fencing

Clothed in white long-sleeve jackets, their faces covered with black mesh masks, the young apprentices stand quietly as they absorb the teaching of their master. Young Jedi in training they are not. Instead of dueling light sabers, it's the swishing of foils, a type of sword, cutting the air and clanging against each other. These are young home-schooled students learning the art of fencing at the South Side Bible Church. Craig Smith, who operates the Tri-Blade Academy, has taught fencing lessons for home-schooled students for five years, the past three at this church on Beckley Road. Smith and his assistant,...
